The 2007 model builds on the success of earlier FX Bikes, adding beefier components and strengthening frame construction for higher performance capabilities with no significant weight increase. Its low weight gives the superlight mountain motorcycle the unique benefit of being portable on a standard hitch-mount bicycle rack. The base model is around 120 lbs / 55kg; a heavy-duty rear wheel option brings it up to 125 lbs / 57kg ready to ride.
Re-engineered
Leaning on his previous experience at Boeing, FX Chief Engineer and mountain bike / motocross racer Greg Morehouse redesigned the frame geometry for increased strength and greater stability. Cunning use of materials allows the oversized frame rails to remain thin and light without sacrificing stiffness. Components have also seen a migration towards sturdier options. Lightweight motocross brakes by Formula of Italy have replaced the old heavy downhill mountain bike brakes, resulting in increased braking power and fade resistance. The front rotor has grown from 200mm to a whopping 280mm, and rotors front and back have gone from 2mm thick to 3mm thick. The tremendous braking power of the FX means the rider gets to choose whether to stop before or after the 30-foot drop.
Suspension at the front end is handled by Marzocchi Monster Ts, with an enduro-weight spring upgrade option. While the standard downhill springs will be more than suitable for lighter or less aggressive riders, the motorcycle weight springs are perfect for those wanting a more extreme experience.
Re-designed
FX Chief Designer Jol Yates has worked the same magic he used to work at Porsche to create a simple yet highly effective aesthetic. The fuel tank has disappeared in between the frame rails, making the unique sweep of the frame lines the most striking feature of the bike. The side frame rails and the shape of the swingarm at the rear further integrate with the rest of the design. Colour schemes are specifically chosen to bring the whole bike together and reduce any visual clutter to the absolute minimum. The end result is a bike that is simplified, elegant and refined.
FX Bikes Director Mike Hodgkinson says the new bike is his team’s vision brought to life. “When we first conceived of the FX Bike five years ago, this is what I imagined: a high performance, super lightweight mountain motorcycle with quality to rival any other bike in the world. Greg, Jol and the team have absolutely accomplished that.”
Advance demand has been strong and the waiting list is out to the end of 2006, but it’s worth the wait to own a numbered, collectible and hand-built in New Zealand FX Adventure Team Limited Edition.
This bike is a weapon! It feels just like a motocross bike, but with all the fun of it being lightweight and easy to ride like a mountain bike.

[The FX] is perfect for cutting through uncharted territory, light enough to lift over fences, fast enough to keep you smiling and just big enough for real trail rides.

The Team FX bike could easily become the most fun toy you could get your hands on. Without a doubt, the invention of the year!
